As Netflix fund larger projects by the day, it should come as no surprise to see a two-hour-plus period piece led by one of the hottest actors at the moment land on its site. With the acclaimed Aussie director, David Michôd, steering the project into gritty territory, The King reaches several high points. Timothee Chalamet delivers a passionate, if not sometimes overstated performance as Henry V, who succeeds the throne after the death of his father and brother. Joel Edgerton is brilliant as the brutish Sir John, who loyally accompanies Henry in his battles with the French. Edgerton's writing credits are less exciting, however, where his partnership with Michôd results in a significant decrease in eloquence from the original Shakespearean drama. The artists naturally wanted to capture the translatability of the themes of inherited violence and power in contemporary speech, but too often these spiels play out as bloated melodrama.
