From rave festival reviews to continuous online criticism, Joker arrives with divisive expectations; love it, and you empathise with its violent protagonist or hate it and you're deemed as oversensitive to its brutality. To enter the cinema expecting either of these views to be satisfied might stir some passion, but it gets us no closer to balancing the success and failure of this film. The irony of the Joker dialogue is that many viewers are overstuffing its somewhat conventional directions - overthrow the rich and care for those in need. Although Joaquin Pheonix acts the life out of Arthur Fleck, somewhere along the line Phillips and co. lost sight of how best to convey their vision. At the end of it all, the blood and bile with which the film spits its mantra is both the crux and the achilles heel that withholds its place as just another violent character study.
