Writer: Joana Hogg
Release Date: 30th August 2019
Hot Rating: π₯π₯π₯π₯
Joanna Hogg's The Souvenir is an introspective tale that revisits the director's relationship with a troubled man in 1980s London. During Julie's (Honor Swinton Byrne) time at film school, she meets Anthony (Tom Burke) a bohemian man who potters around London and its surrounding areas. Hogg takes refuge in the quaint dialogue shared between the two leads, whose relationship thrives off many bitter-sweet interactions. In these moments, the wide-angled shots of the countryside are contrasted by the claustrophobic spaces of Julie's apartment, which is disturbed by the toxicity of Antony's behaviour. As the turbulent relationship meanders into darkness, Hogg expands upon Julie's struggles in her filmmaking career to exaggerate the double-edged difficulties of our maturing protagonist. The brilliance of this balanced narrative is that all the drama is brought to a crescendo with the utmost subtlety in acting, where Burke and Byrne shine as the star-crossed lovers destined for despair.
