Director: Lulu Wang
Writer: Lulu Wang
Release Date: 20th September 2019
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥
Culture and family are no new topics in independent cinema. The representation of family in eastern culture is often misconstrued and appropriated for western audiences, yet The Farewell is here for something different. Director Lulu Wang draws on her own experiences as the inspiration for a story about her grandmother, Nai Nai, and her family's decision to keep her cancer diagnosis a secret. Billi (Awkwafina) is the narrator of the story and a bridge between the intersecting western and eastern cultures in the film. Wang makes a conscious effort to translate these differences honestly and respectively through the conversations that are shared between family members. As a supplement to the rich dialogue in the film, the frames are often compiled of colour and offer a stunning backdrop to the different locations audiences are transported to throughout the film. Ultimately, The Farewell provides an insight into the cross-cultural importance of family.
