With streaming sites like Netflix offering an abundance of R-rated cinema to audiences, it's refreshing to see their recent production,  The Perfection, breathe new life into the largely bygone films of Asian extremist cinema. From Takashi Miike to Park Chan-Wook, director Richard Shephard wears his influences on his sleeve throughout The Perfection, albeit through a lens of self-aware American dark humour. Musical prodigies Lizzie (Logan Browning) and Charlotte (Allison Williams) are reunited after a family tragedy required Charlotte to leave the acclaimed school that we learn has shaped the two cellist's lives. The story of friendship begins in China and soon spirals across the Atlantic into a darker tale of revenge and abuse. Shephard, however, remains transfixed with the thematic capabilities of obscene violence and torture, which he echoes from his Asian predecessors. Thankfully, Browning and Williams partake in the director's homage-driven vision and portray the lead characters with burlesque intelligence. These willing performances allow for the film's ridiculous plot to be delivered in a way that elevates the drama to a crescendo of blood, guts and greatness.
