In Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile the physical facet of Ted Bundy's falsely charming image is captured brilliantly by Zac Efron, who accurately depicts the murderer and successfully masters the emotional shifts of Bundy. Outside of Efron's efforts, however, the film lacks any individual character, nor sense of excitement. The B-movie status of Extremely Wicked is seen in its condensed camera work and reluctance to fully characterise those who feature outside of Bundy's lens. Lily Collins plods through her role as Bundy's lover, Liz Kendall, but we learn very little about her triumphs, which director Joe Berlinger subsidises for her unconvincing relationship with co-worker Jerry (Haley Joel Osment). While Berlinger's work on The Ted Bundy Tapes shows a keen awareness concerning the historical facts of the killer's story, the director's attempt to dramatise this complex narrative through the guise of a manipulative romance plot lacks the required dramatic authority.
