Director: Jordan Peele
Writer: Jordan Peele
Release Date: 22nd March 2019
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥
Us is a generally successful return for director, Jordon Peele. Almost submerged in a pseudo-80s Santa Cruz setting that is typified by the film's opening flashback, Us is a time-hopping horror that focuses around the Wilson family, particularly, the mother Adeilade (Lupita N'yongo). The family's beach getaway is disrupted by a home invasion orchestrated by another family who is physically identical to themselves. N'yongo is brilliant as Adeilade and her mirror image who demands her downfall in the narrative. The ensuing drama is tense, often violent but, unlike Peele's predecessor Get Out, much less focused. The regular hints of humour are less of an issue by comparison to the satirical edge that overrides the film's latter half, which is explained in a ham-fisted manner. Sure, there remains mysterious aspects to the film, but the main reading that Peele establishes is too flawed and unexplanatory to really justify the film's backstory.
