Director: Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Windymer
Writers: Stephen King (novel); Matt Greenberg and Jeff Buhler (screenplay)
Release Date: 4th April 2019
Hot Rating: 💥💥
Another Stephen King adaptation has come around and the results are inoffensively okay. The story follows the Creed family's relocation to rural Maine in order to seek refuge from the hustle and bustle of big city Boston. Unbenknownst to the family is a mysterious 'pet sematary' located amongst an ancient burial ground by their house that sparks all kinds of trouble when the family are stricken by the death of their cat, Church, and daughter, Ellie (Jete Laurence). The film unflinchingly portrays the violence and trauma that surrounds both of these events with competent camera work and steadfast performances from Jon Lithgow as the family's neighbour, Jud, and Jason Clarke as the father, Louis. Fans of King's work are likely to be satisfied with this adaptation but, for those hoping for an innovative take on the genre, there isn't enough excitement to bring this film out of its shallow grave.
