Metalhead, writer and exploitation film aficionado, S. Craig Zahler returns with his latest film, Dragged Across Concrete, a slow-burning crime drama about two disgraced cops that are caught up in a heist. The film's pensive pacing is just one of the 'Zahlerian' tropes that are employed throughout the director's third feature, accompanied by a firm-handed use of violence and politically evasive dialogue. Mel Gibson is intriguingly behind much of the loaded remarks as veteran cop Ridgeman, whose unwillingness to keep up with the times has left him and his grief-stricken family in financial woes. A troubling paradox of sympathy and repulsion is a recurring balance that audiences' must weigh in on throughout the film, as emotional drama is often undercut with harsh rhetoric shared between characters. Such a dynamic unwinds by the two-hour mark, where the film's action becomes particularly intense, leading to a brutal, bloody, yet ultimately composed conclusion.
