Under the Silver Lake probes at the absurdity of commercial culture in a mysterious tale of obsession, murder and...owls. Caught in a search for the missing Sarah (Riley Keough), Sam (Andrew Garfield) often believes he is being followed yet, as becomes clear, he is not always a reliable source of information. In fact, his narcissistic and selfish demeanour is troubling, as his shady antics and hypermasculine sexual obsessions for Sarah comes to reak a greater stink than the skunks that populate the LA suburbs of the film. Though, perhaps without its unfavourable lead, the film couldn't usher its vows of criticism on the sexualisation of women in pop culture. Nonetheless, for every self-indulgent visual that creeps among this narrative, these questions air a degree of pretence that will leave audiences divided on whether to helm the film as a classic or a catastrophic mess. Divisive cinema at its finest.
