Photographer Richard Billingham delivers an emphatic vision of his childhood in Ray & Liz. Set in impoverished Birmingham in the late-70s and 80s, the film inspects Billingham's parents from whom the film is titled. There are three main narratives, from Billingham's childhood home to the flat he lived in as a teen and his father's life in a room of the same flat later in his life. The director finds beauty in the mundane and vulgar decor of these spaces, with his frames being both shocking and beautiful. The film's performances are mesmerising and Ella Smith is fantastic as the cantankerous 'Liz', riled up with angst and heartbreak at her life. Sure, such a vision isn't without its loose ends, as I found myself wanting a cohesive conclusion to the drama, but Ray and Liz is a powerful punch of working-class Britain that at no moment feels veiled by nostalgia.
