Three years after the success of his last drama, The Big Short, director Adam McKay returns with an equally tongue-in-cheek biopic. This time around, however, the focus is on the former Vice president, Dick Cheney (Christian Bale), as McKay proceeds to shame the politician and oil tycoon for his heavy-handed involvement in the Iraq war, and the torturing of various war criminals. Though McKay borrows heavily from his previous work in terms of its polemical tone and jump-cut-heavy rhythm, the end result leaves a lot to be desired by comparison. Not only does Vice offer a self-indulgent political commentary on Cheney, but it seems so desperately concerned on demeaning the politician that we lose sight of the severity of his actions. While the humour in the film is, at times, pulled off thanks to Bale's bold presence and carefully placed dramatic pausing, McKay's overall concoction is unfocused on its message.
