Peter Farrelly's Green Book is covered with the sentimental brush that Hollywood often paints its Oscar-hungry films, often wearing its heart on its sleeve throughout. Nonetheless, from the immediate onscreen chemistry between its leads Tony (Viggo Mortensen) and Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), it also becomes apparent how delightfully charming this film truly is. The film centres musician, Don Shirley's American tour as a concert pianist, Italo-American Tony's position as his driver. As the two initially clash and bicker at their cultural differences, and Tony's reluctance to adjust his decorum, the two characters begin to develop a friendship that is sincere and genuine. Likewise, beyond the film's criticisms of its menial presentation, and often half-hearted attempts to challenge racial profiling, there's a real honesty with which the film delivers its message. In the end, this sincerity, matched with two superb performances, is what makes the film a pleasant watch.
