Greek auteur, Yorgos Lanthimos, once again stamps his characteristic venom on his new film, The Favourite, a ferocious period drama that documents the shape-shifting love triangle between a weak Queen Anne (Olivia Colman), her companion Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) and servant, Abigail (Emma Stone). The exhausting experience of watching a Lanthimos' film is often down to the sadism, and downright awkwardness of the characters that feature in them. Sure, The Favourite exhibits these factors, but they're pulled off brilliantly thanks to the trifecta of its leads. Olivia Colman gives a career-defining performance as a disgruntled Queen Anne, whilst Weisz and Stone underpin her fragility with contrasting portrayals of lust and love. Visually, the film draws from Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975), with slow-mo and fisheye shots distorting the decorum of the court. Like the corsets that populate 18th-century fashion, The Favourite continually tightens its vice and grips viewers until breathlessness.
