Beautiful Boy is an honest portrayal of drug addiction. It so often accompanies its scenes with a stylish soundtrack, yet never encourages the use of the substances that feature within these moments. The repetitive nature of Nic Sheff's episodes detail the tiresome experience of being a guardian to someone in such a position. Steve Carrel (David Sheff) embodies this exhausting struggle with feelings of confusion and helplessness, although this characterisation is not always convincing, and sometimes appears insincere to an actual father figure. Similar discrepancies feature in the film's soundtrack which, although expertly curated with ballads, often spoon-feeds viewers with the mood of a scene. In a story which doesn't glamorise the reality of meth addiction, the constant auditory cues feel unnecessary and hinder the emotional weight of the film. Nonetheless, the film's star is Chalamet who, even at his character's weakest times, maintains our hope for his well being.
