Just as the footing begins to slip on originality in comic book films, Marvel brings a new slice of superhero creativity. In what we learn is just one of many New York universes, Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) is an adolescent Spider-Man enthusiast. His somewhat estranged relationship with his father is backgrounded as a mere inconvenience when Miles is thrown into the doubly chaotic role of Spider-Man after being bitten by a radioactive spider. The following action spans across five accompanying Spidey universes and heroes, ranging from a mid-life crisis Spider-Man (Jake Johnson) to a 'noir' Spider-Man played hilariously by Nicolas Cage. The bombastic character chemistry is entertaining and the animation is a consistently dynamic representation of the film's source material. Colourful outlines and gutter frames are just a few of the techniques that embody the film's bold artistic presence, and altogether build a world that is fun, fresh and exciting.
