In a dystopian world where the mere sight of something causes you to commit suicide, 'Bird Box' is an equally ugly viewing experience. Sandra Bullock plays artist Malorie, a heavily pregnant woman who is plunged into a group of terrified survivors when this mysterious presence begins to wipe the earth. Meanwhile, a bleak future narrative shows Malorie making a desperate attempt to save her two children from death as she rows upstream to find safety. The narrative focuses heavily on the lead up to this situation, but there's a sense that this is a wasted preamble to what is an inevitable fate. At times, Bullock plays the role with appropriate haste, as if she too is aware of what lies ahead. The efforts of the lead actor are valiant, though it becomes a little distant from the chaotic backdrop, which somehow makes the terrifying landscape seem exaggerated and ridiculous. As we delve deeper into this absurd world, our sympathies run astray, and we become blind to the purpose of it all. For the better perhaps.
