James Wan's Aquaman may be the "best of a bad bunch" in the continuously messy DC universe. While Patty Jenkins Wonder Woman teased at the capabilities of the company's diverse and multitemporal universe, Wan appears to be boasting the luscious aesthetics that underpin the different locations of the Justice League. Shot in stunning 70mm clarity for the IMAX sequences, cinematographer Don Burgess' bridges the gap between the deep blue and the dry land with intrinsic beauty. While the spectacle is expected of a high-budget blockbuster like Aquaman, the film's attempt to tackle the big topics of global warming and sea pollution are forced and simplified. The agenda of King Orm (Patrick Wilson), to destroy us earthlings because of our careless pollution of the sea, is a pressing topic yet one that for those reasons cannot run surface deep in its critique; its deep sea fun with shallow social commentary.
