In his long-awaited return, director Steve McQueen delivers a widely accessible, yet consistently entertaining project crime drama. Based on Lydia La Plante's mini-series of the same name, McQueen moves the originally British setting to present-day Chicago. Indeed, the film is a dissection of the windy city, as it inspects its polarised political landscape. Viola Davis leads the three female 'widows' on a heist that will both pay her husband's (Liam Neeson) posthumous debts and free her from the vindictive politicians that surround her (Colin Farrell and Bryan Tyree Henry). Davis' performs with a determination that never feels weighed down by her absent husband. This similar drive embodies the whole ensemble cast, who are all fleshed out individuals with their own motivations. If not the conventional action blockbuster that cinema-goers usually flock to, 'Widows' is a city symphony for the 21st century; a film that examines how our environment influences our actions.
