Peter Jackson's World War I documentary is a technical achievement that maintains character throughout. The documentary constructs its narrative without a great focus on statistics yet, while the narrative is stripped down, the visuals are anything but simple. The film consists of digitally restored, coloured footage from the years of World War I. The appearance of these bashful soldiers in bold colour is a jarring moment to the viewer, who is required to drop their war documentary preconceptions, and instead envisage the reality of this event. As such, the film does not solely focus on the futility of war but also pays attention to the comradery and humility of the soldiers. While some battle sequences are repetitive, and often self-indulgent on the mastery of the footage, the overall product is a selfless piece of work; one that somehow makes the cataclysmic tragedy of war seem relatable to a mass audience.
