Aside from the scathing critics, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' can be appreciated for being a celebratory film. It's a biopic that prioritises the positive moments of the Queen's life, particularly how they created some of the biggest hits ever, over the hardships of its lead singer. While Rami Malek embodies Freddie Mercury the performer, the self-proclaimed 'musical prostitute', there's little material that allows the actor to exercise his emotional range when he's off stage. Scenes run frustratingly short, the editing leaves much to be desired, and the dizzying camera zooms of the later, drug-fuelled scenes appear straight out of 'a students guide to filmmaking'. Nonetheless, its hard to fully damn a film that holds its intentions so high, and honours its fans even more. By comparison, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' plays like one of Queen's many hit singles; energetic, enthusiastic, but often masking its deeper subject matter with the pomp of a catchy chorus.
