For all it's fun-loving body comedy, Reuben Fleischer's 'Venom' feels fundamentally soulless. The film follows the traditional tropes of any origin film by establishing our protagonist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as a likeable, yet ultimately 'normal', character. Upon intervention with the crooked millionaire Carlton Tank (Riz Ahmed), Brock is introduced to the symbiote 'Venom', who goes on to change his physical makeup to erratic effects. As an antagonist, Riz Ahmed feels very out of place as the cold-hearted scientist, at times appearing like a caricature of every previous superhero villain. Michel Williams is similarly unimpressive as Brock's girlfriend Anne. While Williams' acting capabilities have been proven in the past, her role here is underdeveloped and reliant on cheap gags to gain our sympathies. These missteps are particularly foregrounded by the film's inconsistent pacing, which leads us from a dizzying exposition of character introductions to a slog of a final act.
