Jeremy Saulnier's new thriller trades suspense for confusion. Unlike the director's 2015 horror flick 'Green Room', 'Hold the Dark' lacks the same tension required to pass off its violence. The drama stems from the death of three children suspected to be killed by wolves, as writer Russell Core (Jeffrey Wright) is brought in to avenge their death. As the convoluted plot develops, we are slowly drained of any excitement for the conclusion, a downfall that is primarily a result of the lack of empathetic characters. Where 'Green Room' took a proactive approach to establish our sympathies, 'Hold the Dark' is so divisive in its treatment of violence and death that it becomes difficult to trust any character's morals. Further attempts to evoke alliance is lost in the clunky editing which, much like the plot, switches back and forth to seemingly unrelated events in an attempt to create a coherent narrative.
