Drew Goddard's latest thriller fails to execute plot twists with half as much severity as his debut feature, 'The Cabin in the Woods'. This is partly a result of the film's convoluted plot, which focuses on mysterious characters staying at a rundown hotel between Nevada and California. While there are plenty of great performances in the film, among which Jon Hamm is superb as a bumbling undercover FBI agent, these characters often feel mismatched against the backdrop of a supposedly dark and gritty narrative. Even at the much-too-late inclusion of cult leader Billy Lee (Chris Hemsworth), the action never feels legitimate 'evil' as such, but more outlandish and foolish. Visually, 'Bad Times' is a great exercise in neo-noir cinematography, with Seamus McGarvey's camerawork underpinning the film's action with a dark colour palette. Unlike this tasteful aesthetic, however, there is no neon-tinted silver lining to this dull cloud of a film.
