Paul Greengrass is a renowned adapter of true-life drama. In '22 July', the director follows the 2011 terrorist attack in Oslo, which was perpetrated by Andreas Brevik and saw the deaths of 77 citizens. A three-part structure details the attack itself and its aftermath upon both the victims and the Norweigan political system. The film benefits from a longer running time in order to fully showcase the scope of Brevik's heinous acts. However, as well as seeing the damaging effects on survivor, Vilyar Hansen (Jonas Strand Gravli), so are Brevik's abhorrent politics also aired in detail. Even more frustrating is the fact that these views are simplified to being a result of his upbringing, without a full discussion of the environment to which such hate may have manifested. Alongside the second-language barrier that the film is constantly up against, 22 July feels somewhat withdrawn from the severity of its narrative.
