'Upgrade' is a sci-fi revenge thriller, and label it meets the expectations of by providing exhilarating action and a collection of untrustworthy characters. The narrative centres on 'Grey' (Logan Marshall-Green), a technophobic mechanic who requires the help of AI 'Stem' to get revenge on those who paralysed him and killed his wife. The repercussions of this choice play out through a series of action sequences followed up by a brooding finale. Although the violence in can often border on ridiculous, the swift camera movements and editing rhythms embody a new vision outside of the conventional fight scene. When partnered alongside Logan Marshall-Green's misguided physical actions, these moments offer equal amounts of chaos as they do entertainment. In sum, despite occasionally overindulging in its entertaining formula, 'Upgrade' delivers a lot of intelligent dialogue on the morals of technology and its endless capabilities in a world that is reliant upon its use.
