Director: Ian Edelman
Writer: Ian Edelman
Release Date: 24th August 2018
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥
Hip-Hop films often share the characteristics of biopics, including real-life narratives and over-dramatised storytelling. In the case of 'The After Party', director Ian Edelman takes things a lot less seriously. Instead, Edelman focuses his story as a buddy comedy, centred on aspiring rapper Owen (Kyle Harvey) and his hopeless friend/manager Jeff (Harrison Holzer) as they try and reignite Owen's musical career after an embarrassing event. While the comedy is lewd and often looks to its numerous cameo appearances (Wiz Khalifa, Desiigner and Teyana Taylor to name a few) for support, the film maintains a consistent level of fun, both through its sharp dialogue and creative visuals. Of the latter, the cross-cutting to social media images provides a unique transition between scenes. As much of the action takes place over one night, the brash slapstick moments provide just enough momentum to keep audiences entertained, even if the thrills are short-lived.
