'Extinction' - 💥💥

Director: Ben Young
Writer: Spenser Cohen and Brad Kane
Release Date: 27th July 2018
Hot Rating:💥💥

Despite slotting into the summer blockbuster calendar with its late July release date, 'Extinction' fails to replicate a lot of the successful formulae found in hit action films. The narrative centres on Peter (Michael Peña), an engineer who is plagued by nightmares of a supposed future where his family and friends are at threat from a mysterious enemy. As these visions play themselves out into reality, the film takes several twists to reveal added layers to both the plot and our protagonists; these moments are less surprising as they appear mistimed and awkward. Audiences are further removed from the intense scenes as a result of the drab performances from Peña and wife Alice (Lizzy Caplan), which often distract from the depth of the narrative. While director Young hits high with his fragmented narrative structure and bold action sequences, these efforts are lost by altogether tiresome performances and weak special effects.
