'Tau' is an overly simplified and poorly written addition to the contemporary sci-fi canon. More specifically, it is a film that settles for mundane dialogue and cheap violence at the expense of saying something deeper about the philosophy of artificial intelligence. At the heart of this technology is 'Tau' (Gary Oldman), a sleek piece of AI that is inbuilt in the home of our antagonist, Alex (Ed Skrein). Skrein continues his villainous acting traits to little payoff, including some moments of overblown shouting and questionably 'psychotic' behaviour. Nonetheless, it is made clear at the midpoint of the film that his role, and indeed his relationship with the imprisoned Julia (Maika Monroe), is secondary to Tau's bond with her. In this alliance, however, neither Monroe nor Oldman give a convincing portrayal of friendship. Instead, much like the film's wit, audiences' emotions are left as artificial as the tech they're based off.
