In what has been a monumental year for Chilean auteur, Sebastian Lelio, the director maintains the success that he earned with 'A Fantastic Woman' in another romance story. This time around the relationship is focused around two childhood friends, Ronit (Rachel Weisz) and Esti (Rachel McAdams) who are reunited after the passing of Ronit's father, a prestigious rabbi in the local community. The majority of the film is set in the Orthodox Jewish community to which Ronit is returning, with the accompanying ideas of faith and honour acting as a thematic staple for the film's drama. For lack of a better word, the romantic turmoil that features in the narrative is beautifully uncomplicated, a feature that is reflected in the film's close framing and primarily diegetic soundtrack. As such, we are better equipped to empathise with the character's moral dilemmas and witness the outcome of these events as brutally honest.
