Matt Palmer's directional debut is as attuned to its thriller conventions as it is to the eeriness of its woodland setting. The film follows two lifelong friends, Marcus (Martin McCann) and Vaughn (Jack Lowden), who reunite to go on a hunting trip in the Scottish highlands. After a disastrous turning point, the two men are thrown into a game of cat-and-mouse with both their guilty conscious and the growing suspicion of the townsfolk around them. With the major moment of disequilibrium occurring so early on, Palmer's main knack is that he maintains a sense of dread for over an hour without a great deal of action. In accordance with these dark undertones, however, so do the intense scenes sometimes feel overestimated or unnecessary. That being said, there is a lot of subtle brilliance in Matt Palmer's twisted thriller, all of which hint towards a successful follow-up film for the director.
