'Thoroughbreds' - 💥💥💥💥

Director: Cory Finley
Writer: Cory Finley
Release Date: 6th April 2018
Hot Rating:💥💥💥💥

Besides his work in contemporary theatre, director Cory Finley is a newcomer to the world of cinema. Despite this inexperience, the director-screenwriter produces a debut that is by no means amateur. On the contrary, Finley's neo-noir is a brilliant piece of satire. The film centres on the friendship between two high school girls, Amanda (Olivia Cooke) and Lily (Anya Taylor-Joy), and their plot to murder Lily's stepfather. Those audience members who do not submit their attention to the duo may find the film a slog, as Finley maintains a focus throughout on the two girls understanding of one another. With some aid from the late Anton Yelchin as a hopeless drug dealer/hitman, this mysterious friendship manifests into a mutual obsession, consistently guided by Finley's abrasive screenplay. It is this dialogue which upholds the consequences of the film's off-screen violence and that makes for a smart, if not disturbing, conclusion.
