'The Tale' is a portrayal of real sexual experience. The film is an innovation by the fact that director and writer, Jennifer Fox tracks her own encounters through the art of cinema. From this reflective experience, each instance of interior monologue is not only engaging with the audience, but also with the artist themselves. This multi-layered plot may have been excessive, if not intrusive, had it not been for the brilliant performances from Laura Dearn (Jennifer) and Elizabeth Debicki (Mrs G). In accordance with the flashbacks and dual narratives, both actors continually reflect the empathetic journey that Jennifer is embarked on. Without such humility, these roles would be disconnected from the story that is being told. Thankfully, at a time where abuse resonates in the film industry,  these performances only enhance the film's potency and further create the impression that this is a story that is more relevant than ever.
