The revenge genre has often entrapped female characters under a sphere of violence and lust. While Coralie Fargeat's directional debut begins with these conventional themes, particularly symbolised through the provocative lead role of Jen (Matilda Lampz), the director soon diverges down her own, blood-beaten path. As the gritty and explicit drama turns to violence, and violence to retribution, the narrative develops into a divisive story of one woman's vengeance against her three male perpetrators. Whether the bloodshed masks the serious messages on the female sexual agency is a question that is often overlapped by further murder and body mutilation, opposed to any dialogue that may voice our lead character's emotions. Nonetheless, as the film arrives at its bloody conclusion, we get a sense that the scars acquired by Jen are indeed the medals of her heroism; a battle cry in the face of those who have tried to suppress her.
