Steven Spielberg's adaptation of Ernest Cline's 'Ready Player One' is a film which basks in both lavish visuals and dialogue. While the former of these traits is to be expected, from the superb worldbuilding of 'The Oasis' to the surplus of pop culture references, the writing team of Zak Penn and novelist Ernest Cline also makes for many moving onscreen moments. At the forefront of these touching scenes are our protagonists Wade (Tye Sheridan) and Samantha (Olivia Cooke) who confidently lead the film's emotional and physical activity in the Oasis. While the structural layers of the Oasis ensure that this setting is always aesthetically pleasing, perhaps a firmer grasp on the political dystopia lying outside of this virtual dreamworld would have provided a more rounded environment on both sides. Nonetheless, the content we are shown is bold, brilliant and, for a 140-minute running time, as big as fantasy blockbusters come.
