'Dark Crimes' has a lot of promising elements encapsulated in its ominous narrative. The thriller follows a troubled detective (Jim Carrey) on the cusp of retirement who gets overly involved in a  murder case that draws many parallels with a Polish novelist's (Martin Csokas) work. Alongside these disturbed performances stands the troubled 'Kasia', played with the emotional fragility Charlotte Gainsbourg is so capable of catching in her roles. Nonetheless, these characters unravel inside the switchbacks of the plot, which never seems content with its continually explicit and misogynistic violence. Such horrific moments could possibly be defined inside a paradigm where justice was served to the antagonist, yet this moment never takes place. As such, the bleak Krakow landscapes bleed into the film's dry pace. In result, audiences are left searching for the action and engagement that has been teased at throughout, a journey that only ends with frustration and sadness.
