'Candy Jar' sits alongside the recent flourish of Netflix original dramedies. In this coming-of-age story, two uber smart high schoolers, Bennett (Jacob Latimore) and Lona (Sami Gayle), are up against each other in the prestigious debating society. Right from the slow-motion opening sequence, their relationship is shown to be as cheeky as it is competitive. It is this quick-witted humour that keeps viewers generally interested, yet also a feature of the film's tonal downfall. Director Ben Shelton throws a melodramatic curveball all-too-early at the film's midpoint, and seemingly unravels the entertainment that had built up prior to this moment. As such, the film plods through a series of teen drama cliches, complete with absent parents and a sugar-heavy diet, and reaches an expectedly sheltered conclusion. As the two teens embark on a continual process of self-discovery, so are viewers guided through a familiar, but often nostalgic, trip down memory lane.
