6 Balloons is a compact, often hectic, journey into the life of Katie (Abbi Jacobson), a woman who discovers her younger brother, Seth (Dave Franco), has relapsed on heroin. The film's intensity resides in the two characters chaotic journey through the streets of California, as Katie tries to help her brother sober up. Director Marja-Lewis Ryan maintains our intention through well-paced drama, balanced by a meaningful script and sensory-heavy moments. We may not be able to fully empathise with the severity of Seth nor Katie's situation, but we nonetheless feel exposed to the same dangers threatening their safety. The divisive nature of the film's visuals, usually packed with symbolism, are often polarising. While Ryan works confidently to establish her sombre aesthetic, the short narrative doesn't quite fuse together all the messages that we have been presented throughout; what concludes is a frustrating shortcoming to an otherwise well-orchestrated and thought-provoking film.
