Director of 'Moon' (2009) and 'Source Code' (2011), Duncan Jones is aware of the capabilities of the sci-fi genre; these previous works showcase an artist enthralled in narrative and aesthetic. In his latest film, 'Mute', a story of a mute bartender up against Berlin gangsters in search of his missing girlfriend, Jones prioritises visuals over storytelling. Our protagonist, Leo (Alexander Skarsgard), is a character devout of both voices, but also audiences sympathies. By comparison to his antagonists, Cactus (Paul Rudd) and Duck (Justin Theroux), we learn little about Leo; this is reflective of the film's awkward character framing. In turn, we are more entertained by the film's evil duo than its leading 'hero'. This is not to retract credit from Rudd and Theroux who provide devious chemistry but, much like the film's cityscape, their presence becomes tiresome. 'Mute', bar some moments of on-screen chemistry, is shallow by Jones' innovative potential.
