'Lady Bird' - 💥💥💥💥

Writer: Greta Gerwig
Release Date: 23rd February 2018
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥

Greta Gerwig's solo directional debut is a consistently emotional portrait of teenage life, as well as the burdens that arise when one matures. Such wide-spanning emotive features, from the relationship shared between Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) and her mother (Laurie Metcalf) to the financial depression of her father, Larry (Tracy Letts), are executed brilliantly through a fine-tuned screenplay. There is no disguising that this element is at the forefront of the film, and sometimes dwarfs the potential for any visual aesthetics of the Sacremento setting. Nonetheless, the superb performances by all the cast ensure that this never distracts our emotional attachment to the lead characters. Of other prominent supporting roles, Lucas Hedges and Timothee Chalamet are great binaries in Lady Bird's romantic life. Gerwig's ability to keep these different elements in check allows for her characters to blossom into honest representations of adulthood, thus winning audiences hearts in the process.
