Much like the Wakandan-born superhero himself, Ryan Coogler maintains ideals of determination and unity. Of the later, Coogler's latest film is a monumental figurehead in African American cinema, in which all main roles are occupied by characters of this race; Lupita Nyong'o (Nakia) is superb as T'Challa's (Chadwick Boseman) muse. While this fact may appear a trivial footnote to the film's overall critical response, to which has been very positive, these choices offer a reassuring forecast for diversity in contemporary cinema. Nonetheless, the political ruckus accompanying the film is tedious when considered alongside its place within the MCU, a genre with which certain tropes are recurringly recycled. Unfortunately, despite some visual polishing from Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison ('Mudbound'), 'Black Panther' adheres to this mediocrity. Of such criticism, 'Black Panther' is regularly torn between adhering to its generic conventions, and Coogler's bolder vision of a superhero with both ethics and style.
