Tom McCarthy B2B - The Cobbler (2014) and Spotlight (2015)

The Cobbler
Writers: Thomas McCarthy and Paul Sado
Release Date: 31st July 2015
Hot Rating: 💥

Tom McCarthy's knack for introverted comedies has been clear since his debut film, The Station Agent (2003). In just under six months time from the release of The Cobbler he would juxtapose these skills with doubly successful work on the drama, Spotlight (2015), to which he would receive an Oscar for the best original screenplay. Of the former, McCarthy finds a disappointing mishmash of the two genres, to which the bawdy performance of lead Adam Sandler hits all the wrong notes. From its offensive racial profiling and unconvincing romance sub-plot, the film takes what is an initially quirky idea of a shoemaker with fantastical powers of shapeshifting into those around him, and twists it into an obscene narrative of human indulgence. The wasted potential for unique costumes and sets are as equally frustrating as the film's illogical conclusion which does, in fact, confirm its dull philosophies on identity and family.

Spotlight
Writers: Thomas McCarthy and Josh Singer
Release Date: 29th January 2016
Hot Rating: 💥💥💥💥💥

In a complete role reversal from his previous comic filmography, Tom McCarthy took to the real-life story of child molestation in the Catholic Church, and its subsequent exposure by the Boston Globe, to produce his greatest work to date. In similar circumstances to many biographical films of a sensitive subject matter, the film does not voice its facts through bold visual aesthetics, but instead through expert acting and clinical directing. Of the former, the supporting roles of Mark Ruffalo (Mike Rezendes) and Rachel McAdams (Sacha Pfeiffer) shine through as expert expressions of raw human emotion, thus embodying the film's themes of determination and resilience. In correlation, despite the overwhelming amount of content McCarthy is set to the task of dealing with, he ensures that his screenplay is efficient and focused. In doing so, Spotlight unfurls with a thrilling intensity, providing its story that demands attention from its viewers.
