In a role that is the epitome of showmanship, Jack Black finds fame, fraud and acting freedom as the con-man Polka singer, Jan Lewan. The film is true to its biographical source, 'The Man Who Would Be Polka King' (2009), and thus embodies every absurd turn in the singer's life. By comparison to the cult documentary, the film provides little additional information and instead serves to parody its narrative at times. At times, this has humorous results, as such the relationship between Jan's best friend Micky (Jason Schwartzman) and Mother-in-Law Barb (Jacki Weaver). However, these additions grow tiresome by the end, whereby potential moments of interest are demoted. Our political intrigue of this American dream is exhausted by cheap gags and some questionable costumes. Unlike the poor gulls who fall victim to Jan's ploy, audience members aren't missing any tricks, even if they are sometimes left wishing for something more.
