The coming-of-age thriller, 'Super Dark Times', is a perfect gateway for anyone interested in dark, independent cinema. Film enthusiasts will recognise the popularity of the genre, of which many films have been accumulating at American film festivals such as the Film Independent Spirit Awards. In this year's awards, director Kevin Phillips has been nominated under the 'someone to watch' category. His debut feature offers enough symbolism to warrant such a nomination, to which the iconography of hands, and their violent functions, is perhaps the most inquisitive in the film. However, such elements are often at risk of being overused. In this instance, this is more a process of saturation of an otherwise intense narrative telling of three teenage boys caught up in an accidental murder. The results are frustrating in the conclusion which, despite being accompanied by picturesque cinematography (Eli Born) and ambient audio (Ben Frost), is somewhat underwhelming.
