As one of Marvel's key summer blockbuster assets, there was a lot of expectation for audiences going into the spiderman; a new Spiderman (Tom Holland), a new villain (Michael Keaton) and, perhaps most excitingly, a new suit. Director Jon Watts balances Spidey's New York setting, and the expansive Marvel cinematic universe, to which recent efforts such as 'Captain America: Civil War'  result in a cluttered ensemble of superheroes. While the film falls into the often cheesy potholes of Marvel humour, geek jokes and slapstick alike, Tom Holland's spidey executes much of his boisterous persona, elevating these jokes from their sometimes b-roll worthiness. There are action scenes aplenty, of which the ferry sequence is perhaps the most intensely executed. One of Marvel's better offerings of last year, but one to which teases more than it does satisfies, as I look forward to Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War this upcoming summer.
