In his first film since the box office smash, Cinderella (2015), Kenneth Branagh looks to Agatha Christie for inspiration, adapting his acclaimed 1934 novel 'Murder on the Orient Express'. Branagh's rigorous attention to detail ensures the film is as stylish as it is truthful to its source text. The execution of the mysterious and complex plot, focused around finding the murderer of a fellow passenger of the orient express, is not without its pitfalls. Of these failings, Branagh's Poirot performance is distracting in its lavish nature. From such a mismatched performance do other character's chemistry with the moustached detective appear cold and, above all, unauthentic. In a narrative where the multiplicity of a character is essential, the supporting performances of Judi Dench (Princess Dragomiroff) and Willem Dafoe (Gerhard Hardman) appear too gimmicky for their own good. While Branagh navigates his source material with authority, the final article is rather lacklustre.
