'Good Time' was met with a six-minute standing applause after its showing at Cannes last summer, to which one can only imagine audiences were as shocked as they were amazed by the film's raw narrative. In just as much as the film's condensed, one-night, setting offers a gut-wrenching insight into the life of Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson), so does it also offer an ensemble of emotion, from pain to relief, anger to sadness. Alongside actor-director Benny Safdie (playing Nick Nikas), Pattinson stuns as the sewer-dwelling brother willing to do whatever it takes to free his brother. It is such desperation that exhausts the film's intensity at times, leaving audiences overwhelmed by the ambivalence of the film's lead character. Nonetheless, for a sure-to-be cult classic, look no further than this striking thriller.
