The interwoven Marvel universe took another bold and visually impressive step in Scott Derrickson's 'Doctor Strange' which, by comparison to his previous works ('Sinister', 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'), is undoubtedly his best film yet. The British-led cast, consisting of Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tilda Swinton (The Ancient One) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo) progress with equal parts chemistry and unity, as they work to triumph the evil of antagonist Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen). In the recent Marvel catalogue, in particular, the Avengers series, the visual effects have dwarfed the narrative, offering little beyond some high-budget mayhem. By contrast, the team behind 'Doctor Strange' (Stephane Ceretti and Richard Bluff amongst others), certify their 2017 Oscar nomination with high-octane action and slick design. In such aesthetics does the film navigate toward an enigmatic finale, of which bodes an exciting future for both our protagonists, as well as the ever-growing Marvel universe.
