'Assassins Creed' - 💥

Director: Justin Kurzel
Writers: Bill Collage, Adam Cooper and Michael Lesslie
Release Date: 1st January 2017
Hot Rating: ðŸ’¥

Of all last year's underwhelming films, it is the third feature from acclaimed Australian director, Justin Kurzel, that peaked my disappointment. While impressive video game adaptations are few and far apart (practically non-existent, for that matter), Kurzel's previous work alongside Fassbender and supporting actress Marian Cotillard (Macbeth, 2015) instigated the idea that this flick might be more promising; this was not the case. The dynamic landscapes and action sequences that gained the video game franchise so much acclaim become cluttered, signifying a director far out of his depth, while Fassbender's unusually stale performance drain viewers of any potential empathy for our protagonist, Cal. Beyond the film's CGI-driven aesthetics, its action is as ancient as the relic of which we are told to take interest in. However, I remain optimistic that Kurzel's next film will settle for brains over budget, and certify the directorial skill he showcased in his previous endeavours.
