Synopsis: Sentimental Value follows Nora (Renate Reinsve), a successful stage actor drawn back into a fraught family dynamic when her estranged father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), a once-revered film director, attempts a comeback with a film inspired by their own lives. Her sister Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) is pulled into the reunion as old wounds resurface.
Review: Joachim Trier's follow-up to The Worst Person in the World is a brilliantly moving return to the terrain of family and memory, reuniting him with screenwriter Eskil Vogt and star Renate Reinsve to superb effect. As Nora, drawn back into her estranged father Gustav's (Stellan Skarsgård) orbit when he attempts a comeback film inspired by their shared history, Reinsve anchors the film's emotional core, while Skarsgård finds real vulnerability beneath Gustav's charm and avoidance. Trier's aesthetic choices are unexpectedly bold throughout, not least a hypnotic sequence of merging faces that lingers long after the film ends, and the production design ties the whole together with real elegance. Beneath its stylish exterior, this is a film of genuine delicacy, conveying the fragility of familial relationships with a precision that confirms Trier as one of European cinema's finest chroniclers of human experience.
